Abstract:

Objective

To explore the optimal and the minimum nurse to patient ratios according to the orthopedics characteristics, and to provide reference for clinical nursing human resources allocation.

Methods

Nursing service quality evaluation scale (SERVQUAL), Patients satisfaction questionnaire, Chinese Maslach Burnout Inventory (CMBI) were used to assess the nursing quality, patients satisfaction and the status of paramedics in different nurses to patient ratios, and to analyse the correlation among the results.

Results

The results showed a certain correlation between nurse to patient ratios and nursing quality scores, patients satisfaction ratios, job-burnout-nurse ratios, which can be described by three functions. By means of function calculation, we found that the optimal nurse to patient ratio is 2.8, and the minimum ratio is 0.17 to ensure the high quality nursing service.

Conclusions

The optimal nurse to patient ratio of orthopedics is 0.28 and the minimum ratio is 0.17. Nursing human resources allocation can refer to these ratios in clinical practice.

Key words: Nurse to patient ratio, Nursing, Human resources allocation
