Abstract:

Objective

To investigate and compare the efficacy of percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) under DSA by radiologists and orthopedic surgeons at primary hospital and percutaneous kyphoplasty under C-arm by orthopedic surgeons on the treatment of thoracolumbar osteoporotic vertebra compressed fracture (OVCF).

Methods

Forty-two thoracolumbar osteoporotic fracture patients treated with PKP in Wenjiang branch of Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital from January 2011 to March 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into A and B group according to the time of admission. Among them, 20 cases were performed under C-arm by orthopedic surgeons (group A) while 22 cases were treated under DSA by radiologists and orthopedic surgeons (Group B), the application value of department’s collaboration of PKP were evaluated by observing the operation time, VAS and postoperative complication between two groups.

Results

All patients in group A completed the surgery successfully except for 1 case of X-Ray fluoroscopy failure, while all patients in group B successfully completed the surgery. The operation time of group B was (25.4±1.9)min, which was significantly less than group A (48.3±2.6)min, difference was statistically significant (t=80.392, P<0.05); VAS score on postoperative day 1 in Group A were (3.4 ±1.3) and in group B were (2.0±1.1). VAS score on postoperative 1 month in Group A were (1.6±0.3) and Group B were (1.1±0.4), data in Group B were significantly better than Group A (P<0.05). There were no serious complications such as pulmonary embolism and spinal canal leakage in both groups.

Conclusion

The speed and efficacy of PKP under DSA by radiologists and orthopaedic surgeons are significantly better than those of orthopaedic surgeons alone under the C-arm.
